You helped make strong, independent community oversight of the Newark Police Department a reality with the creation of the city’s first Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) (PDF).
But now, the Newark Municipal Council is considering changes to the CCRB law that would undermine the Board’s independence – allowing Mayor Baraka or any future mayor to remove a community-nominated Board member for any reason, even if it’s based on political reasons or retaliation for an unpopular decision.
Currently, Board members can only be removed by the mayor “for cause.” Without this protection, the CCRB’s independence is stripped. Board members would have to make decisions about controversial police brutality cases knowing that an unpopular choice could result in their removal, and that fear could influence how they vote.
Send a message to the Mayor and Council to demand they preserve the independence and strength of the CCRB by rejecting these changes.
